Report: Santa’s fleet analytics

  • Post author:

As the festive season approaches, Santa Claus and his team of dedicated reindeer and elves are preparing to embark on their annual mission of delivering presents around the world. This extremely complex operation involves meticulous planning and precise navigation to be successful.

With growing populations, increased customer demands, and busier driving conditions globally, it is necessary to assess past fleet performance in order to reveal critical anomalies and achieve greater efficiency this Christmas.

To support Santa's team on their biggest night of this year, we've been asked to showcase their fleet analytics for the year 2022 and demonstrate the following:

    • Fuel & Emissions: Top emissions contributors and top emissions periods for the year.
    • Driver & Customer Behaviour: Top unsafe driving events recorded, speeding events recorded, and cookies vs. delivery ratio.
    • Christmas Utilisation: Fuel economy by region, deliveries recorded by region, fault codes, and reindeer utilisation.

Here's a look at their fleet dashboards:

Fuel & Emissions 2022

Key findings

  1. Santa and Dasher are the highest methane emitters due mainly to fuel source (Halloween candy) issues.
  2. Expected fuel card theft. Potentially more carrots are being consumed than needed due to this which is inflating emissions.

Recommendations

  1. Santa to crack down on fuel theft. First, look into Dasher and potentially the elves who are suspected of stealing the fuel card.
  2. Look into potential emissions-cutting technology (bio-carrots). When fuel and utilisation are optimised, take a step towards EV sleigh options.

Driver & Customer Behaviour 2022

Key findings

  1. Last year over 40 million presents were not delivered. Population increases were not planned for.
Driver behaviour is erratic during the 25th of December. Need to look into critical driver behaviour events like "Reindeer rollover events" and "Fire lit in chimney events".Santa and Dasher are the highest methane emitters due mainly to fuel source (Halloween candy) issues.
  2. Expected fuel card theft. Potentially more carrots are being consumed than needed due to this which is inflating emissions.

Recommendations

  1. Look into safer route options and potentially recruit a second or even third driver so the load is shared and leads to less pressure in getting deliveries done quickly.

Christmas Utilisation 2022

Key findings

  1. Reindeer are highly under-utilised around 360 to 364 days of the year.
Some reindeer have heavy utilisation even when nothing is scheduled. Expected that staff members (ie. elves, Mrs Claus) are using these assets for activities unrelated to work (personal use).

Recommendations

  1. "Use it or lose it". The most expensive asset in the fleet is the one that doesn't move. If selling the reindeer is not an option, consider finding additional ways to utilise the reindeer such as pool-deer programs or leasing out reindeer to other delivery and logistics businesses such as Amazon.
